Gem-quality kyanite is available in a range of colors. The 0.98 ct greenish blue faceted oval in the center(gift of Frabrice Danet, GIA Collection no. 36693) is reportedly from eastern Madagascar; it was characterized in detail for this report.

For comparison, chemical analyses were obtained for four additional kyanites: a 12.76 ct bluish green crystal from Namibia, a 6.31 ct blue rectangular step cut from Brazil, a 1.43 ct blue cabochon from Nepal, and a 1.05 ct dark greenish blue rectangular step cut from Andilamena, also in eastern Madagascar.
